Spine Surgery Recovery
Aaron
Successful accountant back on the job without pain after
spine surgery & therapy to relieve a herniated disc
As a certified public accountant, Aaron
often works long hours at a time on his
computer. He began having low back
pain off and on again a few years ago.
The pain started out mild at first but
as time went by the pain worsened and
became more constant.
Aaron visited an orthopedic physician
for relief from his pain symptoms. The
physician encouraged him to try anti-inflammatories
to help relieve the pain
and reduce any swelling. Aaron also tried
chiropractic care which offered some
temporary relief from his symptoms but
the pain would soon return.
In late September 2010, Aaron
started feeling severe low back pain that
radiated into his left leg. His orthopedic
physician ordered an MRI of his spine.
After viewing the MRI, the physician
referred him to Dr. David Sundstrom, a
spine specialized neurosurgeon at North
Jersey Spine Group.
Dr. Sundstrom examined Aaron
and studied his MRI results. The spine
surgeon explained to Aaron that he had
a herniated disc at L2-L3 and together
they talked about treatment options. Dr.
Sundstrom explained that the disc had
moved out of place and was pressing
against a nerve root causing the severe pain Aaron was experiencing.
Since Aaron had already tried months
of conservative care, his condition
would likely require a spine surgery to
remove the portion of the disc that was
damaged and remove pressure from the
nerves.
Dr. Sundstrom performed the
surgery in October 2010 and Aaron felt
immediate relief from the low back pain
he had experienced for several years. The
radicular leg pain was gone also. Aaron
started physical therapy at North Jersey
Spine Group three weeks following his
surgery. During physical therapy, Aaron
worked with spine specialized therapists,
Kimberly Kuiken, DPT and Cathy
Kuschan, PT. He learned exercises
and stretches that would strengthen
his spine and make it more resistant to
strain. Aaron also received a customized
home exercise program which he still
incorporates into his daily routine.
Today, Aaron is back to work and
staying active. He even has a treadmill in
his office. “I walk every morning and if
I’m on a long phone call, I’ll take the call
while on the treadmill,” Aaron remarks.
“Happy to be more active now and
thankful to not have the nagging low
back pain I’d experienced for years.”
